Landmarks Association Pike County Ramble 2012

The St. Louis Landmarks Association had another Pike County Ramble in May.  I hosted the group…many who were returning ramblers from last year's tour to Clarksville and Paynesville.

We had a lovely day and saw the best of Pike County and Louisiana.

We started at our family farm- Rockford Farms where they saw our historic Griffith McCune house and then the adjoining Rockford School House. Afterwards we saw the historic McIlroy House perched up on a hill with a perfect view of the rolling hills and valleys. From there we traveled to Louisiana.  The group waived at the historic Stark Home on Highway D as they ohhed and ahhed! At the first stop in Louisiana they were greeted by the Osborns at their historic Luce House on Georgia Street. See the first set of pictures below. Afterwards we dined at The Eagles Nest on chicken and shrimp salad. After lunch we toured the perfectly restored Jackson House on Georgia….peaked into one of the historic Buffum homes….visited Stark Nursery….then somehow we got the bus up through the rambling River View Graveyards roads to catch a view of the river and Illinois valley beyond. The group was impressed and will certainly spread good words about Lousiana, MO and Pike County!

On Thursday I represented the Buyers of a home perched up on a bluff in Louisiana, Missouri. The viewed of the Mississippi River are astounding. You would think with views like this that the house would be $1 million+….though it was very affordable. Originally they were looking for a historic home in town, though once they saw the views of the river….they were taken! The couple is going to initially use the home as a weekend place and then plans on moving to the community permanently.

Coreopsis

Good morning. I stayed at our farm last night after a closing in Louisiana Mo yesterday. I think I heard bobcats…or were they foxes at about 4 AM On my way to list a historic property in Arrow Rock Missouri. I saw this pretty field of coreopsis at a neighboring farm.

Easter at the Farm

This was the first year that we had Easter at our old farmhouse. We generally have it at my cousin's house on the property- the Old School House  It is generally to cold to use our house this time of year, though this year it was perfect. Someday I will add heat again. I removed propane stoves from each room a few years ago. They were placed in front of each fireplace and they made me nervous and were unattractive.

Apple Trees

I used to have the best dwarf apple tree out at our farm that produced a bounty! My sons were younger and had so much fun picking them each Fall. Well a bull got loose in the yard and knocked it down. :(   I bought another apple tree and planted it about 8 years ago. It is very large now, though does not produce apples. I finally realized that it is not a self-pollinating apple tree. Now that Spring is in full blast and knowing that my apple tree was ready to bloom….I scurried up to Stark Brothers in Louisiana, MO to pick up some mates for my tree.  I have no idea what kind of apple tree I planted 8 years ago, so I bought one self-pollinating tree that will mate with any tree and then two other varieties.  Granny Smith, Golden Crisp and a Candy Crisp. Now I just need bees!
