Rockford Farms | Pike County | Painted by Bryan Haynes

A special present for me this Holiday Season!  Local New Regionalist artist, Bryan Haynes, just delivered the painting of our family farm in Pike County. Rockford Farms is on the National Register of Historic Places as the Griffith McCune Farmstead. The home was built in the 1850’s with a sizable smokehouse on the right. Notice the old oaks that still stand on the property. The landmark octagonal barn is circa 1900. Off to the left is the Rockford School House that was turned into a home in the 1950’s for my Aunt Bunny and Uncle Swede when they moved back to Missouri from Wyoming. On the upper left is a small, pre-fab house that my grandparents put up on the hill enjoying the best views.

Thank you Bryan for a piece of art that will be enjoyed by many generations to come.

Residence of Dr. Eric A. Cunningham at Louisiana, Missouri Functional in Design and Built Into a Rocky Bluff

(The following text is from St. Louis Post-Dispatch – Sunday, June 23, 1940 Page 79)

A house which is functional in the sense that its lines were determined not by a desire to conform to a type but by the particular living accommodations the owner wanted, is the third in a series of residences in the St. Louis region which is are examples of contemporary architecture. This house is the home of Dr. Eric A. Cunningham at Louisiana, Missouri, and the architect is Beverley Nelson of St. Louis.

Built into the rock of a Mississippi River bluff, on the site of an old quarry, it commands a wide view of river and of wooded hills. On the river side, the house is three stories high, on the land side, two. The walls of the top story are wood, of the intermediate story, brick, and of the lowest story part of which is below ground rock. There are four master bedrooms. The house was completed late last year (1939.)

West side with the front entrance, of Dr. Eric A. Cunningham’s house in Louisiana, Missouri. On this side the house rises two stories above the ground. At left is the service wing, in which are kitchen and garage.

View of the east side of the house, showing how it is built into the rocky bluff above the Mississippi. Here the lowest floor, on which there is an extra living room, suitable for recreation purposes, is on a level with the terrace immediately outside.

Living room, on the east, or river side, of the house. On either side of the fireplace, windows look directly out on the river, while at north and south ends of the room are other windows giving views up and down the stream.

Owner’s study, with walls of oil-stained white pine and built-in book shelves. One of its windows looks out on the river.

Eagle Days & a Special Open House January 28

untitled_4-365x485

Missouri is one of the leading bald eagle states. Thousands of Eagles migrate south each fall to hunt around the open waters of our rivers and lakes. More than 2,000 bald eagles are reported in Missouri regularly during winter, making our state one of the leaders in the lower 48 states. The bald eagle was formally adopted as our national emblem in 1782. In the 200 years since, its numbers suffered a great decline. However the bald eagle has recovered and it is reported that more than 7,000 nesting pairs are found in the lower 48 states. In 1995, the federal government downgraded the bald eagle’s status from endangered to threatened throughout its range. A few bald eagles usually are seen in Missouri by mid-fall but most arrive in December. In some cases, a bird will return to the same location each winter to find food in unfrozen lakes and rivers.

The Grace House located at 101 S 3rd Street, MO 63336

This is an extraordinarily rare opportunity to buy an important building designed by noted architects Charles Nagel & Frederick Dunn who designed many fine homes & churches in the St. Louis area.

This property was the quaint Grace Church that looked over the town of Clarksville. It was established in 1869, but the current structure was built in 1940. The red brick building is in Georgian style, with dentil molding, a barrel roof, dual staircases leading to the front door & 5-foot porthole windows.
